Thomas Swalla is the co-founder and a Managing Partner of IO Capital, where he serves as the Operator, the “O” in IO Capital. Originally from Iowa, Thomas brings a blue-collar leadership style and work ethic to his role, gained from his formative years and from leading companies through significant growth and transformation. He partners closely with founders and management teams on the day-to-day work of company building, from team and culture to go-to-market, M&A integration, and the operating systems that scale a business.
Prior to founding IO Capital, Thomas was the CEO of Dotmatics, a life sciences R&D software company sold to Siemens for $5.1B, where over an eight-year tenure he oversaw 14 acquisitions and deployed more than $1 billion of capital. He previously served as CEO of Student Brands (sold to Barnes & Noble Education) and as CFO and COO of Savings.com (sold to Cox Enterprises). Thomas is also Executive Chairman of VisualLogix and a board member of Nimble.LA. His experience leading and scaling businesses has given him a deep understanding of the challenges and hardships that CEOs and their teams face. He’s acutely aware that success is rarely a straight line up and to the right.
Thomas also serves on the Board of Trustees of Wrestle Like a Girl, which uses wrestling to empower girls and women to become leaders in life. He left the University of Iowa to help start his first software company, but eventually returned and earned a BBA in Finance and Management Information Systems. Thomas lives in Los Angeles with his wife and daughter, his dog Juniper, and a guinea pig named Banksy. Founders can reach Thomas at thomas.swalla@iocapital.com.
